School Culture

Dear Parents and Visitors to our Website,

Firstly, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all visitors to our school website. I hope that from the information you read here you are able to develop an understanding of the ethos, values, curriculum and provision we have in place at Grimsdyke on a day-to-day basis.

Our guiding ethos at Grimsdyke School is “Learning and Achieving Together”, which is underpinned by a strong belief in the UNCRC Rights of a Child. We believe that our pupils should always be at the centre of what we do – shaping both our daily practice and strategic decisions. This enables us to nurture each pupil into a confident, respectful, and valued member of our school and wider community.

To bring our ethos to life, we have developed our SCORE values in partnership with students:

  • Self-development
  • Citizenship
  • Opportunity
  • Respect
  • Enrichment

These values underpin everything at Grimsdyke: they drive our aims, guide behaviour and relationships, and shape how our curriculum is planned and delivered. We are proud to offer a safe, cohesive and inclusive environment where students feel valued, supported, and challenged through a broad, balanced, and ambitious curriculum.

Across Grimsdyke School, we foster a “growth mindset”, encouraging pupils to reflect, persevere, and embrace challenge as part of their learning journey. We often remind them to ask themselves:

“What can I learn from this, what can I do differently next time” - Carol Dweck

As a staff of excellent practitioners, we are committed to ensuring this happens on a day-to-day basis because we believe that they are key elements of lifelong learning.

In order for students to achieve and develop holistically, they are encouraged to learn in a variety of different ways as individuals and as groups. At Grimsdyke, we endeavour to involve students in their own learning by providing opportunities to set goals, collaborate, take leadership roles, and adapt to new situations and developing a positive mindset where mistakes and challenge become a key part of their development and progress. These opportunities develop a well-rounded learner that is able to adapt to a wide range of situations, thus making the best of all learning experiences now and in the future.

Our curriculum is both knowledge-driven and skills-oriented, where these two dimensions reinforce each other. We blend a clear progression of subject knowledge with carefully planned skill development, while weaving through key themes such as Rights Respecting, diversity, metacognition, and narrative learning.

Our curriculum enables pupils to leave Grimsdyke as confident and articulate learners, equipped for the next stage of their education. They build strong knowledge and skills that they can apply in new situations, while developing critical thinking, problem-solving, adaptability, curiosity, and a positive approach to challenge and change.

Because we serve a richly diverse community in Harrow and beyond, our curriculum celebrates different cultures and perspectives. We actively ensure that every pupil, no matter their circumstances or needs, can engage meaningfully in learning and benefit from wider educational experiences such as trips and workshops, hands-on-learning, music, art, sport and lots more.

I am often asked what I am most proud of at Grimsdyke. The answer is simple: our students. They embody the school’s spirit and aspirations. They are respectful, engaged, resilient, confident, and responsive to challenge. They maintain high standards for themselves and for each other. Their growth and achievements are a constant source of joy and inspiration.

I also take pride in our dedicated and reflective staff, who strive every day to bring out the best in every child. Together, as a community, we make Grimsdyke a place where learning is joyful, purposeful, and collaborative.

If you have any questions about our school or this website, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Better still, come and visit to see what makes Grimsdyke such a special place to learn and grow.
