Music
Curriculum study of music at Grimsdyke School will ensure students have confidence and competence in singing, composing, recording and performing music and have an understanding of how the power of music can represent meaning, feelings and emotions. They will evaluate and be inspired by a range of musical styles and how these have been used by musicians, composers and communities in a range of times and cultures.
Music is taught across the school from reception by their class teachers and from Year 1 to Year 6 by our specialist music teacher. The curriculum aligns with the aims of the National Curriculum's Music Programme of Study and is further inspired by The Music Model Curriculum. We are dedicated to ensuring that children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community and can use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences in a variety of contexts.
Music at Grimsdyke School extends into a number of other curriculum areas where students experience and develop their skills in a cross-curricular manner. This is evident through the Christmas and End of Year performances. They are involved in listening, composing, practising and performing.
School Choir
Our school choir meets weekly and is led by Bryan Kesselman, the musical director of Tonic Choir. Under his guidance, the children develop and refine their singing skills. The choir is part of Grimsdyke Schools curriculum enrichment offer, and they perform at various school events held throughout the year.
Whole-Class Instrumental Tuition
Grimsdyke School participates in a program that provides whole-year groups with weekly instrumental tuition. Recent opportunities have included Samba for Year 6 and African Drumming for Year 5, with recorders being introduced in Year 3 this year. These sessions are a highlight for the students, culminating in performances for parents at the end of the term.
Young Voices
Students from Upper Key Stage 2 (UKS2) will participate in Young Voices, "the largest school choir in the world." They will learn music, actions, and lyrics in preparation for their performance at Wembley Arena.
Collaboration with Harrow Music Service
Grimsdyke School has a strong partnership with Harrow Music Service, through which we offer extracurricular music tuition for a fee. Students who take up this opportunity receive lessons in small groups and celebrate their achievements at the regular festivals organised by Harrow Music Service and also during the school’s annual music presentations.
Music Timetabling
Tuition groups are kept small and are scheduled throughout the week. Each child is assigned a specific lettered group for their music lesson and children are aware of these through the timetables they receive and those which are on display on the music noticeboard. Students are encouraged to attend these sessions independently.
