At Grimsdyke School we aim to enrich our pupils learning in an integrated programme of Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing.

We hope to develop our children's abilities to listen, speak, read, and write for a wide range of purposes, using language to learn and communicate ideas, views and feelings.
Celebrating national events such as ‘World Book Day’ and ‘National Story Telling Week’ across our school provide our children with opportunities to express themselves creatively and imaginatively, as they become enthusiastic readers and writers of stories, poetry, drama, and non-fiction and media texts. We aim to offer a broad, balanced and relevant Literacy curriculum with excursions and visits that feed into children’s reading and writing.

We use a variety of teaching and learning styles in Literacy lessons. We do this through lessons that have a high proportion of whole class, group teaching and one to one support. We provide suitable learning opportunities for all children by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child.

All children are provided with equal access to the Literacy curriculum. We aim to provide suitable learning opportunities regardless of gender, ethnicity or home background and provide our parents with information and workshop presentations so they can best support their children at home.

We aim to provide for all our children so that they achieve as highly as they can according to their individual abilities. Teachers identify pupils or groups of pupils who are under-achieving and take steps to improve their attainment.

The skills that children develop in Literacy are linked to, and applied in every subject of our wider curriculum e.g. History. The children's skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening enable them to communicate and express themselves in all areas of their work in school. We encourage our parents to play a key role in their child’s education and schemes such as ‘I Love Reading’ promote reading for pleasure at home with parents fostering a love of reading which is important for learning in the later years.
