Music

Curriculum study of music at Grimsdyke School will ensure students’ have confidence and competence in singing, composing, recording and performing music and have an understanding of how the power of music can represent meaning, feelings and emotions. They will evaluate and be inspired by a range of musical styles and how these have been used by musicians, composers and communities in a range of times and cultures.

Music is taught across the school from Early Years to Year 6, using the Sing Up Music Scheme of Work. All children are given the opportunity to experience and develop their knowledge and understanding of the different musical elements.

Music at Grimsdyke School extends in to a number of other curriculum areas where students experience and develop their skills in a cross curricular manner, this is evident through the Christmas and End of Year Performances. They are involved in listening, composing, practising and performing.

Our school choir meets weekly and in the past has performed at the annual 'Song Festival' at the Harrow Arts Centre as well as singing at a variety of school events. The choir is part of Grimsdyke Schools Curriculum Enrichment where the musical director of Tonic Choir works with the children to develop and refine their singing skills.

Grimsdyke School has an excellent relationship with Harrow Music Service and through them are able to offer music tuition at very reasonable rates. Children who take up this opportunity have weekly lessons in very small groups and celebrate their achievements at the regular festivals organised by Harrow Music Service and also through the school’s annual music presentations.

Wherever possible, the school participates in a programme that allows whole year groups to have weekly tuition using the same instrument or instruments. Recent opportunities in this include – Ukulele in Year Three, Samba in Year Six and African Drumming in Year Five. The students enjoy these whole class sessions and look forward to the performance to the parents at the end of the term.

Grimsdyke students from UKS2 will take part in Young Voices - "the largest school choir in the world." The children will learn music, actions and lyrics in preparation for their performance at Wembley Arena (2023).
